Activated charcoal, activated charcoal, coconut shell activated carbon, coconut shell activated charcoal, granular activated carbon, granular active carbon, etc. are just a different name for a specific type of activated carbon.

It is the dark brown or black porous solid fuel remaining after incomplete combustion of wood or wood raw materials, or pyrolysis under the condition of air isolation.

Types and uses of activated charcoal

Activated charcoal is a charcoal with developed pore structure, large specific surface area and adsorption capacity. The total surface area per gram of activated charcoal can reach more than 1500 square meters.

There are many types of activated charcoal

  1. According to different raw materials, it can be divided into plant raw material charcoal, coal charcoal, petroleum charcoal, bone charcoal, blood charcoal, etc.;
  2. According to the manufacturing method, it can be divided into gas activation method charcoal, namely physical activation method charcoal; chemical activation method charcoal, namely chemical activation method charcoal;
  3. Chemistry-physical method activated charcoal;
  4. According to the appearance and shape, it can be divided into powdered activated charcoal, unshaped granular activated charcoal, shaped granular activated charcoal, spherical charcoal, fibrous charcoal, woven charcoal, etc.;
  5. According to the application, it can be divided into gas-phase adsorption charcoal, liquid-phase adsorption charcoal, sugar charcoal industrial charcoal, catalyst and catalyst carrier charcoal.

Activated charcoal has adsorption properties and catalytic properties. It is insoluble in water and other solvents and has physical and chemical stability. Except for contact with oxygen at high temperature, reaction with strong oxidants such as ozone, chlorine, dichromate, etc., it is extremely stable under actual use conditions. Due to the excellent characteristics of activated charcoal as an adsorbent, activated charcoal is widely used.

Use of activated charcoal

Powdered activated carbon

  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • food industry

Granular activated carbon

  • For synthetic fiber carrier
  • For PVC carrier
  • Used for air and water purification
  • Used for synthetic desulfurization

There are two types of manufacturing methods:

  1. Kiln firing method, build a kiln with mud, full of wood, burn from the kiln door or fire door, so that the wood is carbonized in the kiln, volatiles escape and the remaining charcoal;
  2. Retort method, that is, retorting of wood. There are two types of black charcoal and white charcoal according to the flameout method of the kiln.

We do not recommend that you try to make your own activated carbon.
